Back to the Topic

Video clip: Priyanka has been warned that it is important for senior women to feel that can say 'no' to some requests to be on committees.

Okay so we were talking about the committees, would you like more committee work or do you think its fine the level you've got?

I think the level I've got is a good comfortable level, speaking to other senior female academics they have warned me that it can get a bit too much because, you know, the, the kind of pressure to organise a committee that's more sort of diverse and balanced in terms of gender is so high at the moment that if you're the only female in a certain area you tend to get asked to sit on lots of different committees and it can actually be detrimental to everything else that you're doing and take up too much time. So I have been warned and I'm aware that this could happen so but that's the other thing like it's how to be more comfortable in saying no and I think that's something that, I don't know if it's a universal thing but certainly the women that I know tend to feel uncomfortable saying no because you might take away from everything you've achieved so far and people will think, well I don't know, I don't know where I was going with that [laugh].
