Women in Science

Back to the Topic

Video clip: Bryony says that science is very interesting. She thinks it is a great career in spite of times when it is frustrating. She sees equal opportunities for men and women at her level.

I would definitely encourage people because, certainly in biological sciences, at this level I would say you are actually treated pretty fairly, in my personal experience. I feel as though I interact with males and females pretty equally, and you have a lot of opportunities.

I think it’s a great career, it’s extremely stimulating. It’s incredibly interesting and I hope that I can keep it going because I feel that once you’ve done this and you’ve had all this; it’s frustrating don’t get me wrong, and there’s times when it doesn’t work and you’re just banging your head against a wall and reviewers reject the papers and it can be grim. But at the end of the day, you’re doing experiments that no-one’s done before because it’s a question that doesn’t have an answer yet and it’s pretty cool really. So I love it and I would absolutely hands down encourage people to go down this route.
