Women in Science

Back to the Topic

Video clip: Eleanor says gender is irrelevant to being a good scientist and encourages women to 'try it!'

Do you have any messages for women thinking about a career in science?

Try it. Yeah [laughing]. And I think also just don't think of yourself as a woman in science. You're a scientist. It doesn't matter. If you're going into a weightlifting competition; being male or female would be important. In science, it is completely irrelevant and I think that's what we need to change, actually that there is any connection between what gender you are, and your ability as a scientist. I think if we could change that, we would make a lot more progress.
